Our dedicated team is currently dissecting this new feature, but while they're at it, we thought it fitting to offer you an in-depth exploration of this cutting-edge addition to the Shopify platform.

What is Shopify one-page checkout

One-page checkout, often termed single-step or one-click checkout, is a streamlined checkout process confined to a solitary page or step. Its hallmark is simplicity, courtesy of fewer fields, with the rationale being: lesser the steps, lower the abandonment, hence, higher the conversion. But, does this always hold true? Well, it's not quite so black and white...

One-Page vs. Multi-Page Checkout

Many merchants gravitate towards a one-page checkout under the presumption of its superiority. However, this isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. For some businesses, the traditional multi-page checkout outperforms its single-page counterpart.

The consensus is that the one-page checkout appeals more to a younger demographic, products with lower average order value (AOV), and mobile traffic. Geographical considerations also factor in, with certain nationalities preferring a swift checkout while others prefer a more meticulous, step-by-step approach (such as Japan and Germany).

The conventional multi-page checkout in Shopify unfolds across four steps:

1. Information: Customers enter essential details like name, email, and address.

2. Shipping: Customers choose from available shipping methods.

3. Payment: Customers pick a preferred payment method.

4. Order Confirmation: Customers view an order confirmation page, also known as the thank you page, ideal for post-purchase upselling.

Shopify also provides a hybrid solution with one-click payments through express payment options like Shop Pay, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, and Amazon Pay. Customers only need to sign into their existing account, effectively bypassing the entire checkout process.

The choice between one-page and multi-page checkouts depends largely on your business model and checkout optimization. We've encountered numerous one-page checkouts across various e-commerce platforms that were simply overwhelming with information and fields.

Activating Shopify's One-Page Checkout

As of now, Shopify's native one-page checkout is only accessible to a select few merchants. However, you can submit your store for potential early access.

We anticipated that Shopify would initiate the rollout with Shopify Plus plans. But in a surprisingly, the lucky store is actually on a standard Shopify plan!

Alternative solutions exist in the form of third-party apps, but many "one-click checkout" apps only reroute customers to the conventional checkout.
